Have you ever felt lost, not in the physical sense, but in the mental or spiritual sense? I was definitely lost when I wrote "Cartography". I think the chorus sums it up perfectly: "Here I am, underneath the streetlights, wondering, take the left or take the right". I was at a point in my life where I would be making a lot of decisions that would drastically impact my future for the long term, so I took a break from it all to write out a song. Its one of my favorites to play live because I can normally always find something in my life that involves some decision-making, so this song is naturally easy to express for me in a live environment.
lyrics
VERSE I
I walk the streets alone at night
And hold my breath by candle light
I need some direction, I need some direction
So many places, and ways to go
The darkness makes it hard to know
Which way to go, which way to go?
CHORUS
So here I am, underneath the street lights
Wondering, take the left or take the right
I need some time, but time is too expensive
And so I’ll try, and try to use this lesson
VERSE II
I’ll check the maps, with cartography
Looking for places that I don’t see
It’s all a mystery, it’s all a mystery
Searching the cities, one by one
It seems my fate is on the run
Leaving me behind, leaving me behind
BRIDGE
My destiny, is burning me, miles away from here
So far behind, though the stars are aligned, so clear
And I can’t help but wonder, is this destiny over
‘Cause I’m moving slower, than ever now
I’ll have to pick up the pace, and continue the chase
And finish the race, at last
END
Its time to decide
And make up my mind
On where to go from here
